Il Banbaro is a formidable original enemy of Brinose expanses, with features similar to those of a moose and ready to use its great horns to strike you. Before Iceborne we had the opportunity to face him during the beta testing phases, where he proved to be a tough enough opponent even for the most skilled hunters. When challenged, you can never let your guard down, especially if it is in its freezing natural habitat.
Nature of Banbaro
As mentioned, the Banbaro is a big monster with two huge horns and a very massive body size. Its size allows it to uproot entire forests and level rocky piles as if they were made of paper. We will meet him just as he is intent on modernizing the Frosty Expanses, opening a passage for us to a new area and attacking us for disturbing him.
Most of his attacks come from the head and, of course, it uses its two horns as its primary means of inflicting pain. This, however, leaves him uncovered from the torso down, despite some occasional blows of the tail that invest a large area of land. Its fur protects it from the cold and also makes it quite resistant, leaving the exposed spots of the flesh almost weakened. Furthermore, due to its size, it is not very fast and several of its attacks are preceded by a very long charge.
Strategia
First, the Banbaro differs somewhat from the rest of the dwellers of the Brine Wastes in that it has a Fire Weakness of 2 stars instead of 3. What bothers him the most is the Dragon element, which will work in your favor if you have the old weapons of the Nergigante or Vaal Hazak within reach.
In terms of the effects of his attacks he cannot inflict a particular status, rather it is the terrain on which you fight him that makes a difference in what he can do to you with the rocks he pulls out of the ground. A Mantello Antighiaccio is therefore recommended for his first meeting, but also Vitality e Stability (together with the Technician) are very useful against the damage of this colossus. In case you encounter him elsewhere, defend yourself accordingly, for example by wearing a Fireproof Cloak in the Crystalline Lands.
Once you are in battle, your first target should be to rbreaking horns and tail. The former won't take away the damage, but aiming your head will make it much more likely to stun or exhaustion. If you use heavy weapons, try to predict his charge by knocking him away and knocking him down with a good blow delivered just before he hits you.
Cutting the tail will also allow you to back away less during the few times you decide to sweep. Its length will also be excellent for being able to cling with the Claw Grapple when he tries to escape, as well as exploiting this tool to overcome his weaknesses.
Using the Claw Grapple, you will also get some pods capable of interrupting its dangerous charges with rocks or trees stuck in the horns. Leveraging Lampo, Bomba and Thorny pods, you'll be able to knock him over whatever he's holding, interrupting a deadly charge and preventing him from throwing debris in your direction.
Dangerousness and Rewards
The Banbaro's most dangerous moves are the ones they exploit the debris that it digs with its snout, especially when found in lava soils. You must always be careful to understand what kind of attack he is making and avoid being thrown into the air from his run. If you stay too low or linger in the recovery animations, the conclusion of the debris transport will overwhelm you with its explosiveness, putting you at risk of missing a mission attempt.
To stay safe, measure well the moments in which you will want to attempt the frontal approach and use them to release the most damaging moves you have in your arsenal. Covered traps are also a good way to make sure you break his precious horns and get the monster armor materials. In addition to being aesthetically close to the idea of a Viking hero, it is particularly useful for users of Shields thanks to Offensive Guard and Health Bonus.
