New Super Luigi U review

New Super Luigi U review

Hard not to remember New Super Mario Bros. U, a title that accompanied Wii U on the day of release in stores and that won the hearts of fans with 82 levels full of adrenaline and increasing challenge (our review here).
Like New Super Mario Bros. 2 for 3DS, Mario 2D for Wii U is finally getting its own DLC, however, in the form of a whole new adventure, this time dedicated to Luigi, available from June 20th in digital version on Nintendo eShop, and in stores with a special completely green package starting next July 26th.

Luigi's world

New Super Luigi U he follows the story of his elder brother in detail, but completely eliminates the figure of Mario, replaced in the introduction filmed only by his hat, abandoned on Princess Peach's table.
The worlds and bosses are the same as in the main story, but the 82 levels have changed both stylistically, it will happen in fact to meet elements of the landscape with the features of Luigi, both in regards to the difficulty. Each level will in fact be finished in a maximum of one hundred seconds, and collecting all the Star Coins this time will prove to be really a feat, also thanks to the lack of mid-level check-points, which pushes the player to give the best of himself and to learn from their mistakes, as happened in the Gold Rush mode of New super Mario Bros. 2.
There are also costumes present in the chapter for Wii, such as the Propeller Mushroom, which will allow Luigi and his friends to take flight, or the Penguin Costume, which will make the plumber slide prone on expanses of ice and water, allowing him to quickly reach the end of level flag.
In any case, the protagonist costume of the title remains that of Flying Squirrel, together with the baby Yoshis scattered around the colorful worlds of the Mushroom Kingdom.
Unfortunately, even in this DLC we find the all too easy end of the world bosses. While each enemy has their own battle different from the others, beating one of Bowser's nephews will be a lot less complicated than getting through some particularly difficult levels.
From a graphic and sound point of view, on the other hand, New Super Luigi U is practically identical to the counterpart released on November 30th.

The Ruboniglio of my dreams

Luigi, unlike his brother, can stay in the air for a few more seconds, and also manages to jump much higher than the red-bellied plumber, certainly giving satisfactions to the pro players of the series, as well as providing new ways of approaching levels.
Alongside Luigi we will find the two Toads, now famous for following the plumbers in their 2D raids on a fixed console, and a new star who will replace Mario, who already appeared in New Super Mario Bros. U: the Ruboniglio.
In the main version (and also here, but only in the single player) it sometimes happened that the masked rabbit stole tools from Toad, and the player had to chase him in some of the levels already completed, to catch him. In New Super Luigi U, a second player armed with a Wiimote will be able to use the same Ruboniglio.
Ruboniglio is ideal for casual players, for those who can't get through too difficult levels, or for those who want to get Star Coins without breaking a sweat. It is in fact immune to enemies, including bosses, and the only ways it can lose lives are falls into the void or other environmental causes such as lava.
An addition that is not necessarily necessary, but which is pleasant if we want to play with our girls or with our younger brothers, even if as we will see shortly, despite its almost immortality, the presence of Ruboniglio does not improve the multiplayer.

Mayhem for up to five players

As in his big brother, also in New Super Luigi U up to five players they will be able to help themselves, or much more likely to hinder themselves in reaching the flag.
Unfortunately, the collaboration is chaotic as usual, and more than cooperating the four players on screen will annoy each other.
The ideal multiplayer would be represented by a player with Luigi, and a second following the action on the GamePad, providing him with the comfortable platforms that will help the first player to collect the Star Coins, to reach distant platforms or to avoid obstacles.
If, on the other hand, the player with the GamePad joins the other four, chaos will reach its climax, causing big laughs, but also various insults among users sitting on the sofa.

New Super Luigi U is offered to the public in a digital version ad an exceptional price of € 19,90 and extends the main adventure of New Super Mario Bros. U with 82 frenetic levels of increasing difficulty; an advantageous price that is not, however, preserved by the physical version of the game.
The DLC will also be released in physical form in stores on July 26, and can be played in this version without the need to own the main game. The only flaw is the cost: the game disc will be offered at the recommended price of € 39,90, and will offer the same contents as the digital version, probably for those who do not have the possibility to download the DLC (no internet connection , insufficient space on memory devices) and for those who do not already own a copy of New Super Mario Bros. U.

Verdict 8.5 / 10 Even better than Mario Comment If the title had only been released in digital, the rating of New Super Luigi U would have been on par, or higher than that of New Super Mario Bros. U, but given that the review has to evaluate both versions we find ourselves making an average between the two prices and the result is what you see on the side. We believe it is the perfect title for a digital purchase, which extends and renews the Mario U gaming experience, making it even more suitable for experienced players of the series. Pros and cons 82 new levels
Fair price for the digital version ... x ... a little less for the physical version!
x Bosses still too easy
