Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Shredder's Revenge It turned out to be an excellent game dedicated to the Ninja Turtles: a scrolling fighting game capable of paying homage to Konami classics and at the same time modernizing a formula that still works very well today, especially in the presence of a rich structure. enough to sustain it.
Well, about a year after release, the guys at Tribute Games wanted to thank TMNT fans with a DLC with a particularly affordable price, capable on the one hand of adding new and interesting characters to the roster, and on the other of introducing a survival mode with some depth, perfect for testing players.
Focused on the goal? We tell you everything in ours Revisión de TMNT: Shredder's Revenge - Dimension Shellshock.
the new characters
Let's start with the squad, which as we have already mentioned has the arrival of two new characters in Shellshock Dimension, Usagi and Karai. The first is a samurai rabbit who wields a katana and knows how to command respect, performing spectacular thrusts that project enemies into the air and powerful combinations with which to hit them before they hit the ground. His special move literally generates a storm of thrusts.
Karai is, however, a determined and lethal warrior, a member of the Foot Clan, but with a strong sense of honor and a firm will to restore the group's reputation. In this case, however, she decides to help. Ninja Tortugas, fighting alongside them and displaying a repertoire made up of fast and aggressive maneuvers, including a special in which he projects his shadows on the screen.
The new way
It's possible to use Usagi and Karai within the game's base campaign, which we talked about in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge review, but what takes center stage in Dimension Shellshock is, of course, the new survival mode, which tries to reinterpret the traditional mechanics of this type of experiences.
In fact, it is not a challenge as an end in itself, but rather a system with roguelite implications: in each attempt, alone or cooperatively for two participants, locally or online, we will have to try not only to go as far as possible, but also and above all collect a certain amount of crystals, which will unlock permanent improvements for the character we are using, from extra lives (essential!) to improving physical abilities.
This progression system will allow us little by little they become stronger and more competitive, to easily overcome the assault of the numerous enemies present and the bosses that mark the path, all particularly aggressive and willing to inflict some damage on us that we will necessarily have to deal with, without having the possibility of restoring our health except on rare and occasional occasions. .
What complicates matters further is the very structure of this mode, which is presented as a sequence of fights within a static scenario, which It is based on the concept of multiverse to offer us now interpretations of black and white comics, now references to the classic Ninja Turtles video games, now oriental settings.
As usually happens in these cases, the game over is part of the experience and we necessarily have to die to learn how the path develops and understand which modifiers to prefer in the transition from one stage to another, among which they simply give us crystals. and those that instead offer temporary impulses or even the possibility of transform into Rocksteady, Bebop or Shredder himself, being able to have a separate health bar.
Wanting to make a note about the formula established by Tribute Games, one could say that perhaps a shared progression would have been easier being able to change characters between different attempts without having to start the journey all over again each time, but we imagine that the developers' intention was also to offer content rich in substance, to be played over and over again.
Technical realization
Little to say on the front technical realization- The two new characters have a design and animation set in line with the rest of the components on the roster, while the scenarios that form the backdrop of Survival mode are certainly interesting and offer some impactful solutions, but they are still being individual screens.
Graphics and sound The aspects of the basic campaign are confirmed to be excellent, with colorful pixel art that pays homage to the coin-ops of the 90s and a soundtrack perfectly functional to the action, with an inevitable nostalgic flavor.
So ultimately, Dimension Shellshock is great downloadable content, an unexpectedly substantial package at a very affordable price - a must-see for those who still enjoy Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge but are looking for a new challenge. The two extra characters have their own motives, Usagi in particular, but it is above all the Survival mode, with its interesting roguelite approach and a degree of challenge that is not trivial, that dominates and justifies the purchase of the package.
