Teardown, the review of a game in which you destroy everything!

In the Teardown review, we find out how to win: you must plan, destroy and escape within the time limit, in a fully voxel environment.

Before we dive into this Teardown review on console, let's explain what voxels are because it is to them that this game owes everything. In very simple words, the voxel is like a pixel, but in three dimensions. Even if they are not 100% voxels (they are in the way they are used, but not in how they are rendered), think of the cubes from the famous Minecraft. These can be of various sizes, to be able to offer very detailed graphics, and in video games they have been used several times, in different ways, but always with exceptional results.

What makes voxels an interesting system is their granularity.: An object in voxels, a simple cup like an endless piece of land, can be dismantled piece by piece. In Skyrim, for example, you cannot freely dig a hole and manipulate the terrain, while in No Man's Sky this is allowed thanks to the voxels used to generate the terrain of its planets.

The perfect colpo

More than an action movie, Teardown is a puzzle to solve

Disassembly is all voxels and it doesn't bother to hide its rough edges, which it uses to create graphics that some might define as inexplicably extraordinary and eerily realistic. Where the image and reflections fail, the excellent physics delivers the final blow and definitively fills the scene.

Precisely from this stylistic and technical mix, the developers of Teardown have invented quite original gameplay in which to take home the victory it is necessary to carefully plan each step of the plan and, normally, rely on the maximum destruction that the game offers. to find a solution. solution to what is in all aspects a puzzle with criminal overtones. In a typical Teardown mission, it is usually necessary to steal tools, documents or vehicles spread across the game map, and then escape before the police arrive to arrest us and declare the end of the game.

Each mission begins with complete tranquility. There are no guards or cameras on the map to pay attention to; This way we can wander around the objectives thinking about what to do without any type of rush or threat. The problem is usually caused by the alarms to which the objects to be stolen, and in some cases destroyed, will be connected: once the alarm cable is broken, the countdown of the minute in which we will have to reach the getaway vehicle will begin. . . For example, if we have to steal three vehicles by transporting them in a truck, we will have to find a way to get them as close as possible without setting off the alarms, starting the actual robbery only when we are sure of being able to complete it within a period of time. that fateful countdown minute.

Let's take a concrete example: in one of the current missions it is necessary to steal at least three instruments placed on as many ships: our solution was to use a crane to load the three ships onto a fourth, larger ship, a kind of merchant ship. and then gather them all near the getaway vehicle.

A growing arsenal

Can a puzzle also be an action game? The answer is yes

Each mission has main and secondary objectives, but many times in order to escape with 100% of the objectives in our pockets we will first have to unlock and improve our work tools. In Teardown you start with a hammer, useful to destroy the most fragile objects and walls, a blowtorch to start fires and remove metal elements, a fire extinguisher to prevent the fire from spreading, and a spray, which will serve to mark the territory so that, Once we take action, we will have no doubts about the path marked in the planning phase. Little by little we will also have access to new objects such as a rifle, the possibility of using a limited number of wooden planks to build new paths, homemade bombs to quickly demolish even the hardest walls, ropes to pull, hold and for everything that comes to mind while you play.

Then each level has special objects inside that we can collect for additional profits, from invest to improve the different tools in our inventory: for example, increasing the number of available shafts, their maximum length, increasing the degree of destruction of homemade bombs, etc. The more we play, the more opportunities we will have to improve our performance on the levels we have already completed.

The law of demolition

The console version of Teardown works surprisingly well

In a context where everything can be destroyed, it is not enough to have an idea but you also have to know how to apply it. Loading the boats on the merchant ship that we told you about before was not a child's play, but it required several attempts because each time something happened that made it impossible to continue. For example, the crane with which we loaded the boats often became unbalanced and fell on the largest boat, causing large tears in its hull; In another case we mistakenly started a fire that we could no longer put out; and while we were trying to tear down the high roof of a large factory it collapsed on us causing our instant death. As Murphy's Law says: if something can go wrong it will. Luckily for us, Teardown grants one save slot per mission, which can be rewritten at any time, so that each attempt is reversible without having to start the entire level from scratch. The game also features simple demolition missions, which reminded us a lot of what happened in the very entertaining Red Faction Guerrilla.

If it falls apart...

What a sight to see the structures of Teardown crumble, especially when we can enjoy it from a safe distance.

In the demolition missions, we will initially be asked to demolish simple structures, mainly made of wood, but as we progress we will encounter increasingly larger and more solid constructions, made of masonry or even reinforced with steel. Disassembly voxels allow for detailed and realistic destruction, where each brick can crumble independently of the other depending on the force applied by an explosion, the weight thrown by a bulldozer, the speed of impact with a lighter van or coupe. This extraordinary physics also affects the driving of the vehicles, which are very fun to launch at high speed, and of course the effect of the inevitable accidents that will occur in the emphasis of the shot. Teardown uses a first-person camera, but when driving machinery, this will switch to a more useful third-person camera.

DLC y Mod

Disassembly: each level, although not very large, is actually very well characterized

The console edition of Teardown comes out at the same time as the second expansion just released on Steam, available here by purchasing the season pass which also includes the first DLC. For the console debut, the developers have also included a selection of the best mods released for PC in recent years - there aren't many, but we sincerely hope that new ones will be added along the way. In addition to the main campaign and the two offered by each of the two expansions, Teardown offers several timed challenges and a sandbox mode in which to spill all our destructive fury without limitations. Did the work day turn out to be harder than expected? Load the sandbox mode and level the entire level!

Talk instead of act, on Ps5 Teardown works excellently throughout the campaigns, as you begin to suffer when using some of the mod pack levels. There's no need to worry: this is a game that sets no limits, so one of the first things the community tried to do was push the physical model to its maximum, even at the cost of completely reducing the frame rate.

Conclusions

Teardown is a truly fascinating project: as challenging and clever to play as it is technically and graphically gorgeous. The sound doesn't disappoint either, but without a doubt its true strength is in the sensational physics. The only limits are in a campaign that deserves a more elaborate structure and in tasks that could be much more varied than those currently proposed. Plus, for a game that lets you destroy everything, Teardown is also quite cerebral and the difficulty ramps up quickly as well. However, if you are passionate about the idea of a "puzzle and action game", we can assure you that you will also go crazy with this game that has also been completely translated into Spanish.

PRO

  • Fascinating graphics
  • Amazing physics
  • Challenging but satisfying!

AGAINST

  • It would have been nice to have more variety in objectives.
  • The campaign deserves more depth.
  • Why is there no snooze function?
