Update: Vodafone Tethering is free for everyone
From the month of April 2018, tethering through Vodafone is completely free for everyone. It will be possible to use the smartphone as Hotspot and exploit the traffic of the offers to browse the Internet also through the computer.
Free tethering is already provided for all new activations, while customers who already have a Vodafone SIM can request it by following the instructions below. However, gradually it will be automatically enabled for the resolution 68/18/CONS AGCOM even to those who do not explicitly request it.
To activate it, simply call Customer Service and request that free tethering be activated.
Alternatively, open the app MyVodafone from your smartphone (if you don't have it, install it for iPhone or Android).
- Tap "Ask Tobi" (a bot used for help)
- Type the word “chat” into the bar several times until the option to chat with an expert appears
- Request the operator to activate free tethering according to resolution 68/18/CONS
- You will receive an SMS after the offer is activated.
Remember to deactivate the "PC Internet Blocking Service" promotion through Do It Yourself or through your operator.

How to use Vodafone Tethering for free
Note Caution! The reported procedure is no longer necessary. Read the paragraph above: Update: Vodafone Tethering is free for everyone
Before continuing, you can avoid any charges from Vodafone (even if the guide does not work well or the procedure is blocked) by accessing your personal page on the Vodafone website and activating the Internet blocking for Tethering.
To do this, simply go to the menu Your offer > Activate new promotions > Internet blocking service and activate the correct item.

This way you will avoid the risk of Vodafone charging you the additional cost of Tethering navigation if you try to connect to your computer through your smartphone without using the trick that you will see later.
Change the APN on your smartphone
Now that you are safe from any charges, to make the change you just have to open the Settings menu of your smartphone and look for the item related to APNs, that is, mobile Internet access points.
On Android it is quite simple, since the menu is usually present within the section YES the data network.
For example, on my smartphone you just have to go to the SIM cards and mobile networks item, touch the Vodafone SIM and finally touch Access point names.
The menu may change depending on the device used, but the procedure is absolutely identical.
Once this menu is opened we will find two configured APN entries:
- Mobile Internet access.
- Internet connection.
In some cases only the first access point may be present, the important thing is to check that the APN is mobile.vodafone.it.
Delete the named access point Internet connection (or the one presented as APN web.omnitel.it), press and hold for a few seconds the only APN left (the one with mobile.vodafone.it) and get ready to make the next change!
To get Tethering on Vodafone for free, simply look for the entry APN type among those present at the access point and add the entry dun to the entries already present (default, supl).
The string will become default,suppl,dun, as shown in the image below (be careful with commas and spaces, the latter are not present).
Now press OK and save the hotspot to the output.
From now on you can use tethering on Vodafone without paying, using the GB available to browse from a PC.
NOTE: Vodafone or your smartphone (especially if it is Vodafone brand) you can change the APN and access point at any time, canceling the changes.
Perform regular checks to see if everything is as recommended.
Enable Tethering on your smartphone
But how to use tethering on Vodafone for free? The easiest method is to create a wireless access point, turning your smartphone into a small portable router.
Procedure for iPhone:
Enter the menu Settings> Cellular and enable the “Personal hotspot” option. Find your smartphone through the computer and enter the password displayed on your phone screen. With a Mac, you can directly ask the phone to enable Hotspot by using the Mac's WiFi menu and choosing your iPhone signed in with the same Apple ID.
Procedure for Android:
Open the Settings menu on your smartphone and look for the “Hotspot” or “Portable Hotspot” menu.
On my smartphone the menu looks like the image below, generally on all devices it is very similar.
Activate the access point input to create a small WiFi network to connect your computer or laptop to. You can set the network name and password by touching the item with your finger Wi-Fi hotspot setup.
