Let's talk about an alternative cell phone created by Justine Haupt with the aim of eliminating distractions resulting from notifications. The idea has materialized in an object that combines vintage and some modern aspect.
Rotary Cellphone was made thanks to a 3D printer and uses an old spinning disk for dialing numbers. Operation is ensured by the Arduino Micro board, used as a controller. There is also a small electronic ink screen that displays information such as missed calls or contact list.
The mobile integrates some physical buttons which can be used to make calls to your favorite or most frequent numbers. In this way, the rotating disk will only have to be turned when it is necessary to dial telephone numbers that are not among the “favorites”. On the side, then, there is also an LED indicator showing the signal situation.
"In a hyper-connected world with people using phones that they don't control and don't understand, I wanted something that was entirely mine, personal and absolutely tactile, that would also give me an excuse not to text but also to demonstrate that it is possible to have a phone perfectly usable that goes far beyond the touchscreen ”Haupt writes on his website where he has shared all the steps of the project to help anyone interested in developing one for themselves.
