The world of Fallout 76 is doused with radiation, and where there is radiation, there are also genetic mutations. Even the player can see their DNA changed: this is a condition with pros and cons, and we want to explain to you exactly what you are facing, so as not to leave you unprepared.
Mutations are a status effect that changes some character attribute values. The methods related to obtaining and eliminating a mutation are simple; getting and keeping the right ones, on the other hand, is a different kettle of fish altogether.

How to get a mutation
Mutations are the direct result of a large dose of radiation. The more radiation you receive, the more likely you are to get a mutation: however, the nature of this is defined in a completely random way. Basically, every element that produces radiation has a chance to give the player a mutation. Some examples:
- Drink unpurified water
- Swim in radiated water
- Touching petrified corpses
- Stay near toxic waste
- Staying close to a nuclear fallout
- Being attacked by toxic monsters
How to cure a mutation
Mutations are permanent until such time as they are cured. If the mutations obtained are not to your liking, it is possible to eliminate them with a couple of methods:
- Usare un RadAway
- Use a decontamination arch
How to avoid mutations
Since mutations are related to radiation, the primary way to avoid them is to avoid radiation as well. In addition to staying away from the aforementioned elements (waterways, unpurified food and drink ...) and wearing equipment that limits the accumulation of radiation, it's a great idea to keep radiation to a minimum, as the greater the amount of health that the latter eliminates, the higher the likelihood of obtaining a mutation.
In addition, there is the “Starched Genes” perk card. It is not possible to obtain (or lose) mutations through this card, regardless of the amount of radiation suffered.
How to maintain a mutation
Sometimes maintaining a mutation is convenient. While each carries negative effects, the positive ones often far outweigh them. Many players, therefore, will want to keep them tight but at the same time want to get rid of the damage to their health.

The best method is therefore heal with a RadAway but only after equipping the "Starched Genes" perk card. As mentioned above, it not only serves to block the obtaining of mutations, but also to prevent them from being eliminated by a cure.
