Have you ever wanted to personalize your objects with a drawing or writing, all from the comfort of your home and with the help of your smartphone. This is what Laserpecker L1 allows to do, a laser engraver, easy to use, allowing you to customize many materials.
How it's done
In the Laserpecker L1 package you will find the laser engraver, a tripod, a 20 cm wooden ruler, a pair of protective glasses, a USB C cable, a power supply and some sheets of recycled paper for the first experiments.
The engraver is equipped, on the rear surface, with a USB-C port for power supply, a status LED and a button that allows you to pause the engraving.
The tripod is only of sufficient quality and we advise you to replace it with a model that allows a more precise adjustment, if you find yourself using it often.
How it works
The engraver connects to the smartphone via bluetooth technology, and everything is managed by an application, available for both iOS and Android. You can also use the L1 on the go, as the power supply is provided by an external battery is enough to make it work.
After downloading the application you will be prompted to make a bluetooth connection, not different from what happens with any accessory, such as a wireless headset.
The heart of this engraver is the smartphone application, which offers the necessary to create the graphics or the writing you want to engrave on your objects.
After selecting the graphics, you will need to indicate the type of material on which you want to engrave, the laser power and the depth. These two parameters are necessary to successfully engrave the different materials, and are preset at the choice of material, even if you can change them. It is also possible to choose the number of times you want to engrave; the laser is very precise and will precisely trace the engraving path, so as to obtain a better result if a single pass is found to be insufficient.
The materials that can be engraved
It is possible to engrave paper, wood, leather, fabrics, plastic, felt, acrylic (opaque) and even fruit and vegetable peel.
In practice, almost everything except metals and glass. In the case of white surfaces, the suggestion is to paint the area to be engraved with a black marker, and then clean it at the end of the engraving. The black ink will be bonded to the material and thus engraved.
The application
On the main screen of the application you can choose between choosing a photograph in your photo album, opening the camera application to capture a photo, creating a graphic from scratch by interacting with the touchscreen or accessing examples, a series of symbols available in the app.
Laserpecker L1 gives its best with stylized images, that is, writings or symbols with well-defined outlines and shapes. If you want to personalize an object with your name you can expect an excellent result, if you want to do it with a photo, the result may be less convincing.
When you select a photo from the gallery, for example, it will be transformed in a high contrast black and white version, with the aim of identifying only the outlines of the different areas of the image. Look at the image above to better understand what will happen.
You will then have the chance to choose between different contrast and black & white modes to define the final image you want to engrave. A slider will allow you to choose how much Laserpecker L1 will have to engrave the surface to define the final image. On a subsequent screen you can resize and crop the image, delete pieces or add text.
Finally, with a defined image, you can proceed to the incision.
Practice Test
After defining the design to be engraved on the surface, you will have to choose the size. To help you decide you can activate a preview: in this case the laser will show the area within which the incision will be made, so that you can understand if you have directed the laser correctly and if the measurements satisfy you.
The drawing will be transferred in an internal memory of the L1, so as not to need the smartphone always connected to get the job done.
Press the button in the application and the engraving will start, line by line. Depending on the size of the drawing, it will take more or less time. From a few minutes to a few tens. At the end of the incision you can evaluate if you are satisfied or repeat it again if it is too light.
After you start using it, you will think of many objects that you can customize: diaries and notebooks, headphone cases, smartphone covers, pens, jeans or other clothes, etc etc. Personalize an agenda, for example, it has been an operation for just a few minutes.
You can upload customized graphics or images found on the Internet to your smartphone, and transfer them to your objects in no time at all. The most difficult operation remains the correct alignment between engraver and object. You will need to be patient and start engraving only when you are sure, otherwise you risk engraving a text or image that is not aligned correctly.
To engrave the Laserpecker burns the surface material, so it is advisable to do it in a ventilated environment.

The Laserpecker L1 costs just over 200 euros. It is not a low price, but it is a unique object that allows everyone to personalize their objects. It is a gadget for tech enthusiasts, and as such it is difficult to assess the impact of the price: for some it will be wasted money, for others a fantastic gift.
Ease of use is high, within everyone's reach, but it is important to take the right precautions. We are talking about a laser that, although not of very high power, is capable of doing damage if not used correctly. The engraving quality is satisfactory and more than suitable for personalizing small objects of common use.
