Miyamoto concepì Lost Levels as the true Super Mario Bros sequel but, given the very high difficulty, the title initially remained a Japanese exclusive. In 1988, Super Mario Bros 2 was released in the United States, created by modifying Yume KÅ ?? jÅ ??: Doki Doki Panic (another platform of the master Miyamoto) and inserting the characters we knew in the predecessor.
In Super Mario Bros 2 - arrived in Asia four years later with the title Super Mario USA - we found ourselves having to choose between Mario, Luigi, Peach and Toad to save the kingdom of Subcon: the kingdom of dreams held hostage by the spell of Wart. A game different from its predecessor and almost atypical if we consider what the history of this series will be, so much so that many fans still snub it today, cataloging it as a title of secondary importance.
At the same time in Japan - we are in October 1988 - what is considered by many to be the definitive title of the saga was released: Super Mario Bros 3. Mario's last appearance on the NES - as the protagonist of a title in the main series - was a masterpiece, one of those games that alone define a genre and a generation… Just like it happened in 1985! The public and critics were immediately enthusiastic, even if someone did not hesitate to criticize the ways in which Nintendo decided to promote the title in the United States.
In fact, in 1989 the film was released in theaters The Wizard which showed inside a lot of Nintendo products and, in preview, some images of the third chapter of the Super Mario Bros series. The addition of several power-ups and a faster game pace, combined with some features taken directly from the previous chapters , make Super Mario Bros 3 a must for any self-respecting gamer.
In 1989 the Mario family also landed as a launch title on the Game Boy, the Nintendo handheld console that would have made sparks around the world. Super Mario Land was yet another classic among sliding platformers and marked the first appearance of Princess Daisy - conceived by the unforgettable creator of Metroid Gunpei Yokoi - kidnapped by the alien Tatanga. In this portable adventure Mario had to make his way through the four realms of the Sarasaland region to save the princess and restore peace.
In these years the Italian plumber depopulated not only in the videogame universe but also in the animation one: in 1989 he appeared in The Super Mario Bros Super Show! - where he is played in some live action segments by the wrestler Lou Albano - while the following year it was the turn The Adventures of Super Mario Bros 3, also arrived in our country with the title "The Adventures of Super Mario".
All this without forgetting the huge success at home achieved with the anime Peach-hime kyushutsu dai sakusen! and with the three OAVs Super Mario Amada. Those were years of exponential growth for the Super Mario brand: a brand that is today a symbol of everything that video games represent.
