Facebook has launched a new experimental application for video calling. It is called CatchUp and is available for Android and iOS smartphones, for the moment only in the United States. The basic operation does not change compared to what already happens with Messenger and WhatsApp. An interesting aspect is that to use it you don't need any Menlo Park giant account.
You can start a one-to-one video call or create groups of people (maximum 8) with which to start a call easily and quickly, without the need to have a Facebook account. In fact, CatchUp works using the list of contacts in our address book. Furthermore, from the privacy settings, there is the possibility to determine which contacts can participate in calls. There is also the possibility to show - through a special button - one's availability at a given moment.
As already mentioned, it is an experimental application that - like many others - was developed by the New Product Experimentation (NPE) team of the Menlo Park giant. There are several apps released in the last few months, all of them more thought out to facilitate communication between people. Among these, there is Tuned (in tests in the USA and Canada): a sort of chat for two where you can share your mood, exchange music tracks via Spotify or create a digital album of your moments.
In these cases, the expansion into other markets depends on the success that the app in question achieves in the countries chosen for the test. We therefore do not know if CatchUp will ever be available in.
