Pokémon GO Guide - Guide to Mega Evolutions and Megaraids

Four years after the launch of the awaited augmented reality application, Pokémon GO is constantly enriched. First of all the raids arrived, to be faced in the company of a good number of friends. It took a while, but in the end we had the exchanges and the friendship system. Then came the fights between coaches and the competitive GO Battle League, which refreshed the gameplay when we almost learned it by heart.

With the release of generation 5 started a few months ago, however, there is a feature that was still missing, and that left intrigued players wondering if it would ever arrive. Finally here they are: the Mega Evolutions are also available in Pokémon GO. Not all together, of course - but at least we can start playing around with them to learn how to use them.

The Mega Evolutions of Pokémon GO

The mechanics revolve around the use of Mega energy. It can be collected from specific raids (which we talk about below) to Mega Evolve any Pokémon that has this form. Clearly not all Mega Evolutions will be available immediately: initially the Kanto starters from the raids and Beedril will be available to you. The cost will initially be quite high (200 for starters, 100 for Beedrill), but will drop after the first use (50 and 25 respectively).

It is therefore a good thought choose a single Pokémon in advance to be Mega Evolved for later use. Note that Charizard forms cost 200 mega energy each. You can have them on the Charizard itself, but you have to pay a total of 400 Mega Energy (on first use).

Once the evolutionary leap is made, the Pokémon remains in Mega form for a certain number of minutes. Until time runs out you can use it in raids, attacks on enemy gyms, battles at Team GO Rocket, against friends and as a companion. The GO Battle League remains temporarily excluded from mechanics, as well as the defense of its gyms.

What do we gain? Of course, the Mega Evolutions in Pokémon GO have nothing to envy to those of the main series. Until the timer runs out (8 hours) your creature no longer so pocket-sized will be empowered, extending its renewed energy to teammates as well. Attacks of the same type as the Mega Evolved Pokémon will also receive an additional boost of approximately 30%, even when used on other Pokémon in the team.

Once a Pokémon is Mega Evolved, you won't be able to upgrade it until the transformation has expired, keep this in mind. The transformation, of course, does not apply to either the Shadow Pokémon (already enhanced in itself) and the Venusaur, Charizard and Blastoise Clone.

Story: "A Mega Discovery"

A new chapter is added to the field research missions (which we could consider a sort of Pokémon GO story mode). In "A Mega Discovery" we will study particular stones, baptized by Professor Willow "Mega Energy", which have gathered around a group of small Weedles. The mission unfolds in four phases:

By completing the special mission, you will gain enough Mega Energy for a Beedrill Mega Evolution, plus a few extras. Remember that the Mega Energy gained here can be used just to Mega Evolve Beedrill (but you can evolve more than one if you have enough energy).

The Megaraid

Mega Evolutions also refresh one of the first mechanics added in the game that hasn't seen anything new in a while. The raids are renewed: First of all, difficulties 2 and 4 join difficulties 1 and 3 (they are therefore also easier now). Level 5 raids hold their own throne, flanked by the new tier of Megaraid.

Here you will be able to face a Mega Evolved Pokémon from a selected pool, which changes periodically. By defeating them, in addition to the normal rewards, you will receive a variable amount of the Mega Energy necessary for the evolution of that Pokémon. Of course, you can also capture the boss, who will return to his normal form as soon as he is defeated.

Pokémon GO Does it still make sense to play it?

For determine the amount of energy obtained from the players of the lobby will be taken into consideration the speed of completion of the raid, but it seems that this is not trivially the time taken to defeat the boss. It is likely that this is related to the number of coaches present, their level and a predetermined amount of time that the current lobby should have taken to complete the raid.

For example: 9 trainers who complete the raid in just over a minute are frequently awarded 50 units of Mega Energy. At the same time, however, with a greater number of coaches (ex: 12) the reward drops to 45 units. In short, to get the most out of the raids, you need to upgrade your Pokémon team with commitment.

You can Mega Evolve any Pokémon (capable of doing so and currently allowed) in your box: you are not restricted to just bosses captured by raids. Remember that Mega Energy is specific to Pokémon, and you will have to face as many megaraids as possible to accumulate enough.

Hitherto The following Pokémon have been released as bosses, and you will find in gyms only those indicated. Apart from these MegaBeedrill is also available. For all those not currently in megaraids, future events are planned that will help in obtaining their megaenergy, as well as field missions that can give you some units.

How to get megaenergy, other methods

In the few months following its release, the system has already undergone important updates that significantly improve the quality of life, starting with a greater amount of energy obtainable from megaraids.

Not only that: from the addition of MegaGengar to the raids, the game can host only 3 Pokémon at a time, among those listed in the table. However, each of them had more than one opportunity to be dealt with. It also remains possible gain megaenergy in other ways, for example with research missions.

During the various events (and beyond) it is indeed possible obtain from Pokéstop research that gives mega-energy as a reward. It could be themed with an event in progress (e.g. Ampharos and Manectric during Electric events), or a random Pokémon (like Kanto's three initials).

If you've already Mega Evolved a particular Pokémon and are low on energy, don't despair. Rather, choose as a companion any Pokémon belonging to its species (for example, Houndour or Houndoom). Walking with him at your side you can get mega-energy for his species, in addition to the normal candy. Finally, pay attention to tickets that extend the Community Day experience. These activate a timed mission, which in some cases may reward you with mega-energy.
