Facebook continues to implement various actions to try to counter the phenomenon of disinformation. So the Menlo Park company decided to extend the limit of forwarding the same message to multiple contacts to Messenger. As already done for WhatsApp, even on the popular instant messaging app it will be possible to forward the same message to up to 5 people or groups.
A move that was made necessary to try to curb the spread of fake news, especially in view of the presidential elections to be held in the United States next November. The forwarding limit aims to slow down the rush of viral news, often false or in any case decontextualized. According to reports from Facebook, this limit has decreased the spread of false messages by 70% on WhatsApp since it was introduced.
“We are introducing a forwarding limit on Messenger to help curb the efforts of those trying to cause chaos, wreak uncertainty, or inadvertently undermine accurate information. We want Messenger to be a safe and reliable platform to connect with friends and family " reads the press release issued by the company. "This new feature provides an extra layer of protection by limiting the spread of viral misinformation or malicious content and we believe it will help keep people safer online," he continues.
It is certainly not a function that alone can solve the problem but that - at least in part - can help slow down the phenomenon. Then there is another aspect. Not being able to decrypt the content of individual messages protected by end-to-end encryption, there is the risk of hitting any type of message, even those that are not fake news.
